From Concept To Character: Writing Your First Book

The Most Fascinating Time Periods

Do you like to read? If so, you should give historical fiction a try, if you haven't already. This type of literature allows you to escape to a whole other time, one you'd never get to experience without reading.

There are historical fiction novels set in many different periods, and you should definitely read books based in whatever time period you find the most fascinating. With that said, though, there are some periods that prove to stand out as the most scintillating settings for fiction.

The Renaissance

Many historical novels are written in the Renaissance period, and it's easy to see why. This period is important because it was a time that got the world out of the dark Middle Ages and helped move us into a brighter future.

During this period, much of the art and history that people know and love got its start. In fact, many historical novels often feature encounters with famed and long-dead artists who walked the earth and did important work during the Renaissance period.

World War II

Wartime is often a horrible and troubling time for a country, but it does make for an intriguing novel setting. For this reason, you may want to try reading some books based during World War II. Even though this war happened a long time ago, it still feels modern enough that people can connect with it. And, there are some truly great love stories written featuring soldiers and the women who stood by them.

Outside of romance, books set in World War II can teach you about the many things happening in the world during that time, such as the Holocaust and Hitler's awful abuse of power, the ways in which technology and new products impacted war, how women began to gain more power and to work outside the home, and so much more.

No matter where your interests lie, you can almost always find a World War II novel that satisfies.

The Middle Ages

Would you like to learn about violent and torturous practices, highly separate classes, the War of the Roses, or knights? If so, you'll love reading books set in the Middle Ages.

As you can imagine, romances from this time period abound, as do harrowing tales of fantasy, often featuring dragons, knights, and castles. If the medieval period calls your name, be sure to read books based in this powerful part of history.

You can pick up any historical fiction book and get very different stories set in very different time periods. The above are just a few of many fascinating periods you can read about. No matter when your book is set, historical fiction can expand your mind and your knowledge in important ways, making it well worth reading.
